Although our governmental positions were created to represent the mass voice of the student body, we are writing this article with the personal observations and opinions we have listened to and developed over the past few months.We had the opportunity to participate in a session with approximately 30 of our classmates who spent nearly two hours discussing aspects of possible Mark Morris/R. A. Long consolidation. At this meeting, we had a chance to learn more details and share our perspectives on a number of issues regarding consolidation. We are offering our perspectives and those of many of the discussion participants in this students viewpoints article.We will start by sharing the concerns with the consolidation from the student perspective. There were concerns that students would not be successful in sports competition if the schools moves up in classification, and that students would have difficulty being selected for the teams that restrict the number of players like basketball, volleyball, soccer and cheer.Students also questioned whether or not clubs new ncaa football jerseys 2013 would be limited in size and students would have difficulty participating in the clubs they wanted.A concern was voiced about losing students favorite teachers if the teachers taught a more focused subject range they might not be able to have their teachers as long as they would in the current situation.Students were concerned about getting lost in the crowd. Safety issues were a concern if there would be a higher chance of aggression in a larger school environment if students in the first few years hung onto their school rivalry.An opportunity lost would be the loss of rivalry including the fun tradition of the Civil War. Some students also worried about the loss of recognition, including opportunities for homecoming royalty and class rank.The community might be challenged convincing the mass of the student body to change some negativity based on a long, long rivalry that is deeply embedded into a divided community.On the flip side, if students were all on one campus, we would not lose all the time shuttling between the two campuses for classes. Students miss an average of 36 hours during a school year by riding the bus back and forth. We would be able to take more classes including additional advanced placement classes.Consolidation would allow a wider variety of more classes, sports, clubs and students can get involved more easily because they can find an activity that they like.Existing activities would combine to be stronger instead of having two average quality clubs, we could have one really good club. Along with the clubs being stronger, individuals participating in the clubs would also be challenged to become stronger members because they are working with the kids who are really committed to the activity.Consolidation would result in better facilities and buildings that students can have pride in and treat well. Students respect and take great pride in facilities that are more modern.Some students believe that if we had one school we would have a stronger sense of community and more unified support from the town. In a larger school, there would be a greater sense of pride which would develop into a stronger sense of school spirit and unity.The greatest commonality we have seen with students in regards to high school consolidation is starting out with reservations and opposition because they are misinformed. When students are better informed, after having questions answered, they are more pragmatic towards the idea of consolidation.After months of careful analysis and participation in meetings, we realize the necessity of taking action is clear with our current situation. Due to declining enrollment and resulting financial implications, along with the loss of valuable class time due to the shuttle bus and declining student extracurricular participation, we are able to see the benefits of high school consolidation more clearly.As ASB presidents of our respective schools, we are very attached to the identities Bulldogs 24 Paul George White Basketball Stitched NCAA Jersey of each school individually but we are able to be pragmatic and see the potential benefits of high school consolidation for future Monarchs and Lumberjacks. We believe a strong student government will help the students from the two schools come together and we encourage now more than ever that students get involved and voice their opinions on this issue in a constructive manner.
