Duration : 00:01:45"Coco" Chanel s serial affairs with illustrious lovers have long been set in print, and Cannes ends its film festival on Sunday with a fact or fiction tale on her affair with Igor Stravinsky.Endorsed by the fashion label ncaa basketball and starring house "face" Anna Mouglalis and Karl Lagerfeld designs, the story chronicles Chanel s 1913 encounter and ensuing affair with the Russian avant garde composer.History agrees that Chanel, a successful businesswoman with connections to Paris s leading artists at the time, did indeed know Stravinsky and was his patron in the 1920s, inviting him, his wife and four children to live in her country home. But biographers are divided on whether or not the pair fell in love and the fashion house itself told AFP that "this is fiction as we have no proof."Biopics are not an easy genre, and director Jan Kounen s "Coco Chanel Igor Stravinsky" elicited little response from critics at a preview ahead of its red carpet premiere at the evening closing ceremony.A century after Gabrielle Chanel launched her now legendary house, and 40 years after her death, Coco currently is all the rage in France.A dozen new biographies are on bookshelves, a TV film aired recently and last month saw the release of a movie on Chanel s Cinderella style rags to riches life "Coco Before Chanel" directed by Anne Fontaine.Fontaine s film kicks off in the orphanage where Chanel was dumped as a child and winds up with her debut as Paris s queen of couture a sort of making of of the fiercely independent free spirited "Mademoiselle" who helped liberate women s wear.Among later chronicled lovers were a Russian Grand Duke, a poet, a designer and the Duke of Westminster, who introduced her to Winston Churchill. During World War II she had a liaison with a German intelligence officer and left France at the close of the war to return in 1953.Fontaine s film shows the young woman moving in with a wealthy horsebreeder and moving up in society, and ends with the 1919 death of "love of her life" Boy Capel, the English businessman who provided the funds to open her first shop in Paris.Kounen takes the plot further, opening at a legendary 1913 Paris concert where Diaghilev s avant gardist Russian Ballet, choreographed by Nijinsky to Stravinsky s "The Rite of Spring", upset theatre goers and raised a storm."It was the most important evening in the history of music," Kounen said at a press conference.Years later, after Boy Capel s death, Chanel and Stravinsky meet again, fall in love and have an affair as the composer s consumptive wife played by Elena Morozova looks on.The film, said director Kounen, "depicts an era and its protagonists, and two bodies of work Chanel s and Stravinsky s.""I show the psychological dimension of the person, the artist s ability to transcend dramatic events in his life but also his obsession and the sacrifice that he makes of his life for the sake of his art."But at one point, the ground breaking composer played by Mads Mikkelsen slaps Chanel down, saying: "You are not an artist Coco, you are a woman who sells fabrics.""Stravinsky," Mikkelsen told journalists, "was an artist, a real artist. What he had inside came from inside. He was cut off from the era in which he lived, contrary to Coco Chanel who was aware of the times.""Coco" Chanel s serial affairs with illustrious lovers have long been set in print, and Cannes ends its film festival on Sunday with a fact or fiction tale on her affair with Igor Stravinsky.Endorsed by the fashion label and starring house "face" Anna Mouglalis and Karl Lagerfeld designs, the story chronicles Chanel s 1913 encounter and ensuing affair with the Russian avant garde composer.History agrees that Chanel, a successful businesswoman with connections to Paris s leading artists at the time, did indeed know Stravinsky and was his patron in the 1920s, inviting him, his wife and four children to live in her country home. But biographers are divided on whether or not the pair fell in love and the fashion house itself told AFP that "this is fiction as we have no proof."Biopics are not an easy genre, LSU Tigers 8 Zach Mettenberger Purple Stitched NCAA Jersey and director Jan Kounen s "Coco Chanel Igor Stravinsky" elicited little response from critics at a preview ahead of its red carpet premiere at the evening closing ceremony.A century after Gabrielle Chanel launched her now legendary house, and 40 years after her death, Coco currently is all the rage in France.A dozen new biographies are on bookshelves, a TV film aired recently and last month saw the release of a movie on Chanel s Cinderella style rags to riches life "Coco Before Chanel" directed by Anne Fontaine.Fontaine s film kicks off in the orphanage where Chanel was dumped as a child and winds up with her debut as Paris s queen of couture a sort of making of of the fiercely independent free spirited "Mademoiselle" who helped liberate women s wear."Coco" Chanel s serial affairs with illustrious lovers have long been set in print, and Cannes ends its film festival on Sunday with a fact or fiction tale on her affair with Igor Stravinsky.Endorsed by the fashion label and starring house "face" Anna Mouglalis and Karl Lagerfeld designs, the story chronicles Chanel s 1913 encounter and ensuing affair with the Russian avant garde composer. Buckeyes 8 White Stitched NCAA Jersey Igor Stravinsky In 1913, the Russian composer, Igor Stravinsky, MADS MIKKELSEN, comes to Paris with his colleagues Diaghalev and Nijinsky, to perform his modernist ballet, "Rite of Spring" before a disenchanted and in some cases openly hostile audience. One member of the audience that night is the newly celebrated designer, Coco Chanel, ANNA MOUGLALIS. Seven years later, after the Revolution has brought drastically sweeping changes to Russia, Stravinsky, his sickly wife, Elena Morozova, and their four children are stranded in the French capital. Chanel, an admirer of Stravinsky s work, offers them a place to live and embarks on an affair with the composer. This film more or less begins where Anne Fontaine s biopic, which was released in France a couple of months before this, left off; but Jan Kounen s film, though visually all you could wish for, is dramatically less interesting than Fontaine s, which told the Chanel story from her humble origins as she rose up the ladder of success. The relationship between the Chanel and Stravinsky is, as the unsubtle title confirms, the core of the film but it s not that involving because they re both basically rather unpleasant characters, at least as portrayed here they re self centred, selfish and really rather boring. Kounen adds a few stylistic flourishes, ELENA MOZOROVA is lovely as the betrayed wife, and the film is very handsomely photographed and designed, an art deco Sycamores 33 Larry Bird White Hardwood Legends Basketball Stitched NCAA Jersey lover s dream. But it s not a very fulfilling drama. MARGARET: No, it isn t. It s surprising. And, you know, really they re it s enough to make you stop fancying Mads Mikkelsen, this film. He goes through the whole film with one expression Fighting Irish 1 Louis Nix III White Shamrock Series Stitched NCAA Jersey on his face. DAVID: Can I say I never fancied him. MARGARET: No, well, you know, I m really pleased to hear that, David. But everything so muted, it s like it s not worthwhile happening. Even the sex in this film is boring and that s sort of like a major achievement, I think. DAVID: I thought the depiction of the presentation of Rite of Spring at the beginning. MARGARET: Is fabulous. MARGARET: It starts out with a bang. DAVID: Wonderful start to the film, Yes. MARGARET: And it was something that caused such a stir in Paris at the time. DAVID: Yes. Yes. And the film makes you understand why, actually. MARGARET: Yes. Yes. But, you see, I think the interesting character in this film is the wife. DAVID: Mm, I agree. MARGARET: And I think it s a lovely performance by Elena Mozorova because and, actually, that s the interesting story, because she actually takes down or writes down all of his music. You know, she is a true collaborator of his. She was married to him forever, even though she had tuberculosis, I think, but he still had another lover for like, well, 30 years of life. DAVID: Apart from Chanel. MARGARET: But she he sort of split his time between the wife and the family Ducks Blank White Stitched NCAA Jersey and the girlfriend, whom he later married. |
