Ines De La Fressange Be it the nonchalant rolled up cuff of a trouser leg, the insouciance of a ballerina flat or the simple chic of a Breton top, fashion and the French go hand in hand. And when it comes to personifying Parisian elegance, no modern woman captures it more perfectly than French supermodel Ines de la Fressange, who has revealed some of her countrywomen s secrets in her style guide, Parisian Chic. "You see women in Milan with perhaps a little too much accessories, too much make up, too much hair, too much all of these things. And there s an obsession with looking wealthy. "Often something more simple would be better. Sometimes I put things together a shirt, a sweater, a jacket and it s too complicated. I would have worn only a v neck sweater, it would have been better. It s not the clothes but it s how you wear them sometimes." Beloved by designers and photographers alike, 53 year old de la Fressange was a model in the Eighties, becoming the first to be contracted to a major couture house, when Chanel signed her in 1983. She spent six years as Karl Lagerfeld s muse before they famously fell out; she was chosen as France s new Marianne (the symbol of the French Republic; her predecessors included Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve) but Lagerfeld disowned her publicly, saying he wasn t interested in dressing a "historic Wolverines 10 Tim Hardaway Jr. Gold Basketball Stitched NCAA Jersey monument". She went on to consult for Jean Paul Gaultier and helped reinvent the Roger Vivier shoe brand. At 51 she returned to the catwalk at Chanel, putting her feud with Lagerfeld behind her, and proving that there need be no upper age limit when it comes to representations of female beauty in the media. Willowy, chic and natural, she is that effortlessly elegant Parisian. She is forever in flats and a navy blazer, wears her hair in natural waves, and mixes vintage, high Broncos 27 Jay Ajayi Blue Stitched NCAA Jersey street and couture with ease. In her book she cautions readers to opt for classic looks trenchcoat, navy sweater, little black dress but she isn t afraid to mix it up. She suggests wearing diamonds with a T shirt, a parka over a chiffon dress, your teenage son s shirt with a push up bra underneath. However, she always returns to simplicity when it comes to defining style. She may be friends with everyone from Carla Bruni to Princess Caroline of Monaco, but she insists that the best piece of style advice she has ever been given came from her nanny. "She told me to always brush my teeth," she says simply. "I see women with a lot of hair done and make up and a lot of clothes and jewellery and then they smile and they have yellow teeth. I always say to my daughters, Nine, 17, and Violette, 11, that there s no need to take care so much of those things if you brush your teeth." She says style can be found everywhere. When she finds out I m Scottish she lets out a squeal of delight. "I used to go to Beauly and there you can find the most beautiful tweed jackets and socks. Everywhere in the world you can find beautiful clothes especially in Beauly and this jacket I bought there, the more it gets old the better Fighting Irish 23 Lebron James Yellow Basketball Stitched NCAA Jersey it is." Much of her advice, she insists, is just common sense, from being vigilant about removing make up at night to shopping for neat, nipped in blazers in the children s department. But in writing the book, she realised that it doesn t come as naturally to others as it does to her. Ever modest, she claims to be boring, but Ines de la Fressange has led a fascinating life. Her mother, Lita, was the granddaughter of the President of Colombia, and became a singer and a model for Guy Laroche, while her father, Andre de la Fressange, was a stockbroker who had his own plane and gave Ines a revolver for her 13th birthday. Her parents were largely absent as she grew up, however, and it was grandmother, Simone, heiress of the Lazard banking family, and one of the richest women in France, who took responsibility for her upbringing. She drove a gold Rolls Royce and took 13 year old Ines to Dior for a made to measure wardrobe. Once, Simone rented a chalet in Verbier for a month during term so Ines s brother Emmanuel could ski. When his school objected, she paid for his whole class to accompany him. It was her privileged upbringing which helped to prepare Ines for her time as Lagerfeld s muse ("being a muse, she says with a giggle, "it s amusing."). When she worked with him he would show her two pieces of silk and ask which she preferred. Without really knowing why, she would always opt for the more expensive one. "To me it was exactly the same, but he would say oh you re right it s much better quality . I saw a lot of haute couture all my childhood and without knowing it I ve learned from when I was a child to recognise beautiful fabrics. "Perhaps if your father is a butcher and you re around his work at weekends or whatever, when you grow up you just know how to recognise a good steak, you know?" She plays down her role at Chanel, insisting she simply served to "act as a woman", preventing Lagerfeld from going over the top. "One time he wanted to put some brooches on my shoulder and my back and I was screaming, saying leave it, this jacket is perfect like this! and then he would laugh. Sometimes being a muse is about asking to stop. To just keep things simple."
