India looms large Weaves from all over the country occupy centrestage at fashion fair. Fashion is often accused of being shallow and superficial. But of late, fashion weeks are aiming at a holistic approach by weaving in interactive, charitable and educational programmes within the five day schedule. The Lakme Fashion Week s Day Three saw a similar initiative as it featured a day dedicated to Indian textile, celebrating weaves and crafts of the country. The first of the six workshops held at LFW had an eminent panel of designers and experts who spoke on the subject The resurgence of Indian Weaves and Crafts nurturing the growth of Indian Textile Heritage . The discussion brought forth many chinks in the system which are harming the indigenous textiles and crafts industry things such as following a foreign curriculum at design schools and the basic capitalist nature of fashion education. Important points were raised as to how we are ready to spend thousands on a Chanel scarf but not on a Jamdani scarf. Later, designers Krishna Mehta, Deepika Govind and Anita Dongre presented beautiful creations on the runway that married global trends to Indian crafts, showing how fashion can be both clever and contemporary at the same time. Krishna Mehta showed some fine detailing, skillful construction along with the rich brocades Seminoles 2 Deion Sanders Red Stitched NCAA Jersey and cotton cutwork, and home grown dyeing and printing techniques on kurtas, tunics, jackets, boleros, blouses, saris and shararas. From the looms of Ilkal Karnataka, Deepika Govind showed Mountaineers Blank Navy Blue Stitched NCAA Jersey a collection called The Woman in Blue Checks Cauvery s Tale. The emphasis was on the fabrics ranging from cotton and silk checks and stripes from Salem, Chettinad, Narayanpet, Venkatgiri and Kanjivaram. The silhouettes were modern and contemporary and included tunics, dresses and saris. The day ended with a full house for Anita Dongre s Waves of Joy collection. Her line up was an eclectic recipe with flavours of Benares silk and cotton and brocade ncaa football fan shop weaves, blended with tie and dye, the hand painted silks of Jaipur, the ikats of Andhra Pradesh and the chikankari of Lucknow. The show opened with Dipannita Sharma doing the showstopping act for the designer. |
