Tigers Blank Blue Stitched NCAA Jersey In another life IF our homes are a reflection of our personalities, perhaps our holiday homes reflect who we would like to be? Leave behind your sensibly furnished residence, with children and dogs underfoot. In our dream retreats we become who we want to be a Moroccan princess in a hammam or a king in his medieval castle. If just one of the homes featured in a new book from teNeues, Luxury Houses: Holiday Escapes, proves this theory, then Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld, who has a palatial mansion surrounded by Palace of Versailles style gardens, rather fancies himself as Marie Antoinette. Well, with his powdered hair and habit of carrying a fan, we kind of knew that anyway. This book is not a collection of homes in which the average holidaymaker might stay. It features luxurious private pads, as well as private villas which can be rented for thousands of pounds a night. For example, Lagerfeld s former Monaco retreat is now owned by a luxury hotel company and is available for 10 to 12 guests from seven nights, starting from e30,000. It s a lot of money, but surely worth it when you see the view to the mountains and the sight of the luxury yachts harboured at the nearby Bay of Roquebrune. Then there are the staff. A professional chef, butler, domestic and gardener are at your disposal. As journalist Stefanie Bisping, who wrote the book s introduction, says: "These resorts fulfil your wishes before you even know you have them. That s what true comfort ultimately is about." Although the exterior of Lagerfeld s rambling mansion is indeed ostentatious, with its 780ft terrace, the refurbished interior is much more refined one supposes to suit the chic guests who stay here. In the book, the decor is described as being "quasi royal" and it s easy to imagine Princess Caroline staying in a place with champagne coloured carpets, mahogany furniture, and chandeliers that sparkle above every landing. "Its cream coloured facade, vast terrace, classic garden and exquisite interior are as remote from nature as Monte Carlo itself," says Bisping, "which is why its grandeur fits so perfectly into an environment where upscale lifestyles have always flourished." If your ideal escape is somewhere far beyond European familiarity, then flick to the pages featuring exotic retreats. Perhaps the five bedroom Villa Dewata, in Basangkasa, Bali (aptly nicknamed the Island of the Gods), might be more your thing. This elegant little retreat ticks all the boxes for a classic tropical island hideaway. There are the prerequisite pure white sun loungers by the 60ft pool, where you can lie and read your Cond Nast Traveller magazine, while nearby palm trees sway gently in the warm zephyr. Inside, the decor features muted colours, offset by flashes of chocolate and orange, and Balinese art works stand out amid the tastefully sparse furnishings. You can just imagine padding around barefoot in this tranquil space, which is bound to exert a meditative effect on holidaymakers. The most striking feature of this villa, and many of the other Bali retreats including Villa Pantulan in Ubud and Villa Sungai near Seminyak is that it has been designed to sit privately within the lush surroundings of bird of paradise flowers and scented bougainvillea. It s beautiful, but there s none of the moneyed, attention seeking gloss of somewhere like Villa Karl. "The Island of the Gods requires a special architectural feel that, rather than disrupting the beautiful landscape, which has been characterised by a traditional lifestyle through the centuries, gives prominence to its characteristics," says Bisping. "When it comes to the Villa Dewata, whose structure and architecture are based on Balinese traditions, architects have done themselves proud. So cleverly do the villa s pavilions, built of glass and natural materials, blend in with the environment of water lily ponds and rice fields, so imperceptible is the design of the transition between its large, seemingly or actually open spaces and the nature around it, that the estate seems to rise organically from its garden." This look is definitely popular among wealthy holidaymakers visiting hot, tropical countries. Many of these properties are made even more desirable with the addition of "nature influenced" water features, including fountains and infinity edge pools, which echo the sight of the nearby ocean. One beautiful beach retreat Birkenhead House in Hermanus, South Africa is a case in point. This private, 11 bedroom house has a double level pool, situated on the shadowy terrace, which is sheltered ncaa tournament 2011 by its Grecian style columns. From this vantage point you can see the dramatic and rocky sight of Walker Bay, providing a ringside seat for a mammalian soap opera in the surf. "Between May and September, Southern Right whales frequent the bay every year to calve," says Bisping. "You can have a box seat on the terrace to behold this spectacle." So far, so beautiful. However, it s easy for the wealthy to tire of white walls and cool, clean lines. If you d rather peep through the keyhole of a place with more imagination, it s never too early to start planning a ski trip to Aspen, Colorado. The heavy wooden beams and deep armchairs of Villa Bear s Creek are just some elements of an overall style that borrows heavily from British aristocratic estates. The rooms just aren t as "quaint" as back in Blighty this place has over 4,000 sq ft of living space. As Bisping says: "Large window fronts, an open dining room and the wide terrace combine the elegance of Old Europe with the spatial generosity of America." The living room in this luxe chalet features tobacco coloured chenille sofas, carved wooden stag s heads, a gothic black chandelier and, of course, a roaring fireplace. "Even in the age of under floor heating and warm bubbling Jacuzzis out in the snow, the sight of a fireplace never fails to warm the human psyche," says Bisping. As it s summer just now, if you win the lottery may we suggest you save the piste for later. Instead, book a trip to the Caribbean, the most heavily featured destination in the book. Perhaps it s the retreats like Antigua Wild Dog Villa, or Bird of Paradise in Anguilla, that make this such a favoured escape for sybarites. The former is a sheer white villa, with no distractions to deflect from the view of the sea, bar the slick stainless steel kitchen, while the latter destination is an atypical paradise, with four poster beds featuring views out to the sea, a canopied day bed in the garden and sultry dark wood furniture inside. If cash is really no object, and you want to live like royalty, then this book just highlights the fact that there are simply too many mansions, and too little time. "Leafing through these pages is bound to kick your imagination into high gear and leave you with one thought," says Bisping. "These are the palaces of the modern age."
