I prefer women to wear Chanel rather than catgut LET ME MAKE it clear right from the start that I am absolutely not a fan of women s boxing and I do not think it should feature in the Olympics. My stance on women s boxing has been well documented in the past, but with questions to be answered on safety grounds in particular, I feel I need to speak out again in light of the International Olympic Committee s decision to allow female amateur boxers to have their own tournament over three weight divisions at London in 2012. I do not agree with women fighting in the ring. Boxing is a dangerous enough sport for men, and I believe there are added dangers for women, and as yet we do not know the full extent of those dangers. For instance, we have heard of cases of women contracting breast cancer after bumping into furniture, so what damage does a punch cause to breast tissue? Women boxers have to take pregnancy tests before they are allowed to fight, but such tests are not always 100 per cent accurate and I am concerned that a woman could be going into the ring to fight and putting herself and her unborn child at risk. It is these and other safety issues which mainly make women s boxing unacceptable to me. The boxing boards around the world do their very best to make the sport as safe as possible, which is why there now all sorts of brain and blood tests for men, both for amateurs and professionals. Presumably Olympic women boxers will get these tests, but the truth is that I just cannot see how a woman can be safe in the ring. Has there been any proper research on, say, whether taking punches in the breast area leads to a greater risk of breast cancer? What other effects does boxing have on women s anatomy? Bulldogs 24 Paul George White Basketball Stitched NCAA Jersey The fact is that boxing is a very dangerous sport and there are times when it is almost indefensible. I know about such times, as I have seen men die in the ring, including one of my own boxers, James Murray, who died in Glasgow in 1995. I dread to think what would happen if a woman was to suffer the same tragedy. I also shudder at the possible facial injuries women might suffer. To be honest, and you can call me old fashioned if you like, I prefer women to wear Chanel rather than catgut. To me, women s boxing is also just not a spectacle. I have seen bouts between women on some of the shows in which I have been involved as a manager of boxers, and frankly I do not like it any shape or form. It is definitely not the "Noble Art" some would have you believe. Some women boxers such as Muhammad Ali s daughter Laila do have the aggression to go with the ringcraft, but there are other women boxers that I have seen who think they are doing some sort of Come Dancing routine. It just doesn t draw me in, and that s another reason why I don t want to watch women s boxing or sign any women boxers. I admit that women s boxing may be gaining in popularity, but that s because a lot of women are taking up "boxexercise" aerobics. Good luck to them, but there is huge difference between that form of training and actual fighting in the ring, and that s where women just aren t very exciting to watch. I have been offered plenty of chances to promote women s boxing, but I have always refused. This has led me to have some terrible rows with Jane Couch, Britain s best known female boxer, who was the first to gain an official professional licence back in 1998. Jane could never understand why I would not promote a show featuring her. Possibly we would have made a lot of money, but my beliefs were so firmly against women s boxing that I told her that if I had to depend on promoting fights between women, then I would retire from the sport. I also cannot see that women s boxing has made a big enough impact on the sporting calendar to justify its inclusion in the Olympics. Every month there are dozens of boxing shows across the country which feature men and occasionally some women, but you never ever see a show which features ncaa college apparel store mostly women and just a few men. We are told there are more than 600 registered female boxers in the UK, but if that is so, how come it has not made a bigger impact? Why does the Boxing News not publish the ratings for women, as it does for men? Could it be that there aren t enough women boxers to allow such lists of ratings to be compiled? We are told that women s boxing must be allowed in the Olympics because it s popular. Well, if that is the case, if it really is a question of a sport s popularity being the grounds for inclusion, then why is Phil Taylor not representing Britain in the Olympic darts tournament ? That s one medal we would win, new ncaa football jerseys 2013 I might say. Being honest, I don t think darts or snooker, or golf or tennis for that matter, should be Olympic sports because the only people who can compete meaningfully in those sports at the Olympic Games are full time professionals, and I don t think that is what Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, wanted or intended. Competing at the Olympics should be the pinnacle of an amateur boxer s career, so people will no doubt ask why do I want to prevent women boxers getting that opportunity. The usual reason given to justify women boxing is equality. We live in an era where equality is everywhere, but does that really mean that because we let men box, so we must allow women to box too? And if it s a matter of equality, why is the IOC allowing only three weight divisions for women in 2012? Why not allow them to box at every weight? To me that s a big indication that this decision has been taken on commercial grounds, just to provide something different for the television audience. Whatever the reason that women s boxing has been brought in to the Olympics, I will not be one of the people watching their participation. It will be just about the only boxing event on television where you can subtract me from the viewing figures. There are a lot of things which women can do equally as well as men, and maybe even better than the male of the species, but boxing is not one of them. Women s boxing should not be in the Olympics. Indeed, it shouldn t exist at all.
